Dry food snacks such as chips or chocolate bars need to packaged airtight to keep the food fresh and their flavor pristine.
Flexible packaging for dry food snacks consists of two layers. To laminate these two layers solvent-based adhesives were traditionally used, however this kind of adhesives comes with several drawbacks. The main ones being it requires a second component (hardener) and need constant viscosity adjustment while running on the machine. Solvent-based adhesives also have a long curing time of up to 48h (additional stock) and carry a risk of trapped solvents between the two packaging layers which can cause an unpleasant odor which may lead, to claims from customers. Additionally, during production evaporated solvents pose a potential risk to employees and the environment.
Archroma’ s more sustainable solution for dry food flexible packaging, Mowilith® LDM 7266 M LS is a one component system which allows for easy (no hardener, no viscosity adjustment needed while running) and safe use during production. Being a water-based adhesive, it does not carry the health risk of solvent-based alternatives. Mowilith® LDM 7266 M LS is suitable for use with high-speed machines and due to its short curing time of about 4 hours it can increase productivity and reduce intermediate stock. Compared to other water-based adhesives Mowilith® LDM 7266 M LS can save up to 30% of energy needed for drying in the oven section. Last but not least, Mowilith® LDM 7266 M LS is cost efficient against solvent-based adhesives.
